Red-hot 3×3 basketball: a former town-hero returns and wins Visit Oradea Streetball

While the weather went from one extreme to the other, with hot temperatures followed by heavy storm, the action was pretty straight-forward on the playgrounds at Visit Oradea Streetball. Serbia’s Dzakovi 3×3, led by former CSM Oradea star Djordjo Djordjic, dominated the competition from start to finish.

Even fellow countrymen in Extra Auto Vrbas could not stand in Dzakovi 3×3’s way, even though they flew in with a future contender in America’s University Championship. Dzakovi 3×3 won the final 21-12 and finished the tournament with all matches won before the completion of the 10-minute playing time.

Thus, the boys from Dzakovi 3×3 earned a check of 5000 ROL and qualified for the national Sport Arena Streetball 2017 finale, which will take place in Bucharest, August 19th and 20th.

Hosted by the land-mark Union Square, close to the City Hall, the 3×3 basketball tournament was the town’s main attraction during the weekend for both residents and tourists who strolled through the city center. Freshly married couples or bachelors wandering around searching for a party-to-remember and their own version of the “Time of my life” story stepped onto the basketball court to make a vivid memory.

The tournament brought together over 200 players, from 10 year-olds to veterans over 45 who all have proven their passion for basketball fighting the extreme temperatures. The storm on Sunday afternoon forced the organizers to end the competition indoor, in the “Antonio Alexe” Sports Hall.

Agro Squad won the Open Women competition, securing a third victory in the season on the national Tour, after having finished first in Tulcea and Constanta.

Saturday, the first day of Visit Oradea Streetball, saw special guests MMA fighter Sandu Lungu and Levente Szjiarto, the most decorated Romanian basketball still on the 5×5 elite competition, take the court. Although he still bare ailing marks of his latest fight, including a pretty serious sprain, Sandu Lungu accepted the organizers’ invitation and went out on the field to throw the ball through the ring. He got guidance from Steaua CSM EximBank’s player, Levente Szjiarto, who has won an impressive 12 national titles during his on-going career.

The Sport Arena Streetball event was organized with the support of Visit Oradea, CSM Oradea and Oradea’s City Hall. The 3×3 national basketball tournament is powered by Raiffeisen Bank, Nike, Fitbit, Ursus Cooler, Gatorade, Ideal Board Games, Red Bull, Pegas and Kiss FM.
