Carpathian Bears, second place at Moscow Open

The Carpathian Bears, Angel Santana, Catalin Vlaicu, Aurel Urucatu, Alin Spahiu and Vlad Ardeleanu finished second at Moscow Open 2012, losing in the final against Lithuania, 7-4 for the Baltic team.

Considered by many a real 3×3 basketball world championship, The Moscow Open had a total prize money of 40.000 USD. The Romanian team received 10.000 USD for their performance.

The Bears had a tough game in the semifinals, against the Serbians from Olimp, but they survived in the overtime, thanks to a magic “and one” by Catalin Vlaicu. The Romanian transformed also the free throw to seal the game. The Bears led by one, 8-7, with 3 seconds to go, but the Serbians leveled the score at the buzzer.

Catalin Vlaicu was the best rebounder of the tournament. It’s the fourth individual award received by a Romanian player in Moscow, after George Alexe, the best 3 pointer in 2008, Angel Santana, the best scorer and Hristu Sapera, the best rebounder in 2010.

The team who represented Romania at Moscow Open will split for Bucharest Challenger, the tournament hosted in the Romanian Capital city, with 5000 euros prize money.

Angel Santana will play together with Silviu Lupusavei and Bogdan Balanica for “Pensionarii Asigurati”, the team who finished second in Prague Open. Meanwhile, Alin Spahiu and Catalin Vlaicu will reunite with their teammates from “Ironie Fina”, one of the best teams from Sport Arena Streetball 2012.
