Stunning weekend set to kick-off: 3×3 Basketball Kings come together for the Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Challenger

The World Champion, the European Champion and the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Champion (the  worldwide 3×3 pro circuit) come to Bucharest for the best 3×3 basketball tournament of the year, Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Challenger. Reaching its 6th edition, the tournament will be held in the landmark University Square, August 12th and 13th.

3×3 basketball fans will have the chance to see the best ten players in the FIBA 3×3 World Rankings in action, starting with world champion and world number one, Dusan Domovic Bulut. 16 teams from 13 countries will take part in the competition.

Serbia’s Novi Sad Al Wahda, freshly having defended their World Cup title in France, are the red-hot favorites in group A, which also features a Romanian team of basketball legends with Virgil Stănescu, Paul Helcioiu and Mihai Paul in the forefront. The group also includes Bordeaux Ballistik, the French World Tour squad making a debut in Bucharest and Russia’s Piter BM-18, who return to the capital-city of Romania after having competed last year as well.

Ljubljana, last year’s winners in the FIBA 3×3 World Tour professional circuit and finalists at the 2016 Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Challenger, were drawn in Group B together with Bucharest Old School, who represent Romania as national team this season. This will be an all-Balkan affair, since the group also features Greece’s Athens Don Poly and Bulgaria’s Sofia Fit Spo.

After last year’s quarterfinal run in Bucharest, Serbia’s Zemun has now reached the world’s Top 3 and is among the favorites this year. It will be a difficult task for Rahova’s Finest in Group C, which also includes Tbilisi Old School from Georgia and America’s Clearwater ATG.

Romania’s youngest competitors, Bucharest Littles, ended in a hot group D, including the European champions – Latvia’s Riga Ghetto Basket, the World Cup finalists from Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Canada’s Winnipeg.

During the weekend, University Square will see a lot of Kendama, this summer’s best-seller in Romania and the toy that got every teenager crazy, thanks to one of Romania’s top singers and entertainers, CRBL. Together with his crew, CRBL will help raise the event’s energy levels on Sunday night, with a special Kendama demonstration, while the attending people in the crowd will have the chance to win personalized toys in various contests.

The cheerleaders from Dracula’s Girls will animate the breaks in-between matches, and chair-bond basketball players from the Motivation Foundation will play a demonstration match on Saturday night.

Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Challenger is a Sport Arena Streetball tournament, organised with the aid of Bucharest’s Directorate for Sport and Youth, powered by Raiffeisen Bank, Nike, Fitbit, Philips One Blade, Gatorade, Ursus Cooler, Red Bull, Bicicletele Pegas, Ideal Board Games and  Steaua CSM Eximbank.
