No Olympic Games in 2020: 3×3 basketball sees its debut postponed

The Tokyo Olympic Games have been postponed to 2021 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the first such delay in the Games’ 124-year modern history, as the global outbreak of COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the international sporting calendar.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made the decision on Tuesday after speaking with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and local organisers, ending weeks of speculation and uncertainty about the Summer Games – initially scheduled to kick off in July.

3×3 basketball was about to make its Olympic debut this summer in Tokyo, after the discipline was introduced in the Olympic family in 2017. As FIBA canceled already all its Olympic qualifiers for indefinite time, the road to Tokyo will be resumed as soon as signs of stopping the actual pandemic will appear.

Four nations in women and four in men already got their tickets to Tokyo in 3×3 basketball, with four other in each division waiting for their chance to qualify.
